I remember the nervous feeling in my stomach when an airport announcement called me back to security. I'd checked a bag and, according to the prominently posted instructions, left it unlocked. I had nothing to hide. Still, I wondered about the unexpected attention my bag received. The puzzle was about the thick book I'd packed.

The X-ray machine couldn't penetrate it, and the officer on duty was afraid to open my luggage. Once I arrived to reveal my harmless treasure, airline personnel put me on a cart to speed me to my plane. If I'd chosen an e-book, I could have avoided the temporary glitch, but also many of the joys of a printed volume.

Why paper?

My experience illustrates that printed books can also be a boon in the digital age. They might be big, heavy and you can't easily slip them in a purse or pocket. However, traditional volumes also provide many advantages and true pleasures. It is easier to concentrate while scanning words on paper. Without the distraction of incoming emails, text messages or sales alerts, reading retention improves.

You'll never have to recharge a paper book. You can lend one to a friend, display it on your coffee table, pass it down to your children, or recover some of your investment by selling it. You can adjust the recipes in your cookbooks with the stroke of a pen and can highlight crucial instructions in a manual.

Paper books are a sensory experience. You can sniff the fragrance that transports you to new worlds, and revel in the glossy feel of a cover an artist has labored to create. The sound of pages turning is like beloved music evoking memories and deep emotions.

Why e-books?
E-books are a natural part of our digital world. They are easy to distribute globally and offer instant gratification to the reader. You can order and download a whole library. If you encounter an unknown word, you can look it up on a built-in dictionary.

Your cellphone, tablet, reader, or computer can all become homes for your e-books. They require no shelf or locker space. If your eyes are tired, or just getting a bit older, you can adjust the font of an e-book for comfort. E-books can also give you access to more authors.

E-books can put less stress on a book lover's budget. They are often relatively inexpensive when compared to print versions, especially when reading on a device that serves multiple functions.

Personal Preference

Whether it's a paper book or an e-book, it's a matter of preference. One thing is for sure: Both are here to stay. Each has its advantages, and even in the current digital age, both can coexist. Humans are visual and tactile by nature. They still would like to see and feel things with their eyes and hands whether printed or electronic.

DVD should be an integral part of your content distribution

The decline of DVDs has been significant in the last few years, but does this mean that will soon go away like video cassette? DVD for video and digital content is still a major player. The rise of digital distribution has been significant and has to be an important part of any organization’s content strategy. While digital distribution is cheaper to deploy and an important revenue stream, it is just one piece of the puzzle. DVD should continue to be an integral part of your distribution if the content holder wants to maximize revenue and take the whole pie.

DVD on demand

While digital distribution is powerful and important, DVD will continue to play an important role. DVD on-demand production and fulfillment gives you an option to get their content on DVD which allows for brand exposure and increased revenue. DVD isn’t dead, it is here to stay.

  • DVD plays a vital role: Consumers remain hungry for content, but are finding more and more avenues to it. Electronic Sell-Through (EST), Subscription Video-On-Demand (SVOD) or Transactional VOD have all amounted to the same pie, just sliced into more pieces. DVD is no more dead than the single-screen movie theatre or the hardcover book, both play a diminished but still vital role in the ecosystem.
  • Digital download has its shortcomings: It is true that mobile devices and tablets are being used for streaming, but when it comes to long-term usage, DVD is simply a better value. Watching movie on disc will remain the best and most reliable way to travel. We are still a long time away when every car has its own wi-fi hotspots or reliable and cheap network when you travel in airport, plane or hotels.
  • Combo-pack is now an industry cornerstone: When a consumer pays for a product it is crucial to reward the customer with multi-platform content. That means if you buy a disc you also get a digital copy. This multi-platform concept is very common in print industry. You subscribe to TIME magazine in print and you have an option for digital download for free. Rather than selling a digital download for $20 and a DVD copy for $20, you offer a combo-pack for $25. This concept is now an industry cornerstone and rewarding to both the consumer and content holder. Consumers don’t have to make the critical choice between digital or physical and as a content holder, you have an increased revenue.
  • Offer DVD on-demand in conjunction with digital download: DVD on-demand production and fulfillment is very similar to digital distribution. When you are offering digital downloads, there is no reason why you would not want to offer physical DVDs as well. DVD on-demand gives you the option to produce & fulfill DVD only when requested. Similar to digital distribution, there is no inventory, no upfront cost and no hassle. Give your consumer all the options, and it helps you to win the entire pie. Using Acutrack On-Demand, there isn’t a cheaper way to get your content to your customers on a physical product.
  • Great way to market your brand and products: DVDs are the standard. Everyone knows how to use them and has a way to play them in their homes. DVDs allow beautiful printing on both the disc and the DVD case. This is a great medium to wow your customers with something they can hold in their hands. Most importantly, DVDs allows you to promote your brand. DVD packaging can be personalized with your signature or client’s name. Many organization creates promotional DVD package with bonus content, limited edition, collector’s edition or expanded edition for marketing incentive. A physical product, like a DVD, produces a different experience and connection for customers.

They can touch and feel real ownership of a product. It is lot easier to sell a collector edition on DVD compared to collector edition as digital download.

Safeguard your Interest before Choosing a Disc Replicator Vendor for your Project

A disc replicator who is helping with your CD Replication or DVD replication project has to adhere to critical steps to ensure that discs are replicated with consistent quality every single time. In order to win business and the pressure to lower cost, many replicators now are choosing to produce inferior disc replication. If you are choosing a good disc replicator, it is best to go with an organization who are experienced and have a track record. A good disc replicator should be able to provide you replicated discs where every disc works in the field, each disc has a consistent print quality and no cracking or breaking of discs in the field. Then, there is a broader issue regarding adult content. As many as 50% of the replicators accept jobs that would be categorized as pornography, and this often leads to horror stories abound of products getting “commingled” at such plants. To ensure the integrity of your job, when choosing a replication company, it is critical to know their acceptance policies in regards to such materials. Our goal is to educate you on the disc replication process so you can make sure that your replicator is serving you well.

DVD Replication
  • Disc Premastering: Disc premastering ensures the disc content provided meets the proper ISO standards when it is organized on the disc. Replicated discs must conform to the strict “Red Book” manufacturing guidelines to consistent quality and playability. A replicator should test the disc for logical file structure, readability issue and verify the master bit by bit before production. Also, to protect interest of all parties, the replicator has the responsibility to review the content against any copyright violation.
  • Glass Mastering: Once the content has been verified, it is time to make a glass master. A glass master is a stamper mold which is covered with a photosensitive layer and engrave disc content with a laser light. To help fight against piracy, the replication plant must engrave its International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) number on every glass disc it produces. Before mass producing, a check disc should be produced and tested to ensure that the replicated discs has the right reflectivity and readability.
  • Disc Replication: Disc replication is a physical production process that involves actually pressing the discs during manufacture from a glass master - the injection molding of clear optical-grade polycarbonate substrates (clear discs) from the nickel stamper. The process also involves the metallizing and lacquering of those polycarbonate substrates to produce a perfect copy. Some plants choose to go with recycled polycarbonate to save money which could results in creating brittle discs which could crack in the field. Replicated disc then go through the print process either on silkscreen printing press or offset disc printing press.
  • ID Checking of final product: Now, the final quality control. It is not uncommon that disc mixing can happen in replication or printing process due to machine or human error. To ensure that there is no product mix up, a good disc replicator house must have infrastructure to fast disc scanning equipment. These disc scanner sorts out the discs either by image comparison or ID identification which are encoded on the back of the disc during glass mastering process.

In conclusion, a professional replicator should avoid producing adult content, safeguard your interests, and replicate your discs with the highest quality.

With the World Wide Web becoming the preferred platform for business transactions, digital distribution is the natural option to offer your product online. However, there is no reason why you would not want to offer physical DVD in conjunction with digital download. For example, an online entrepreneur who maintains a yoga website may have different video recordings. If the website entices a good number of followers, it will become a need for the business to offer both digital download as well as DVD for all their video content. Websites that are also dedicated in marketing music, inspirational talks, life skills, and others have to make content available both digitally and on duplicated DVD. To respond to the increasing media on demand of customers, many companies that are selling such products need the services of firms specializing in duplicating DVDs.
